HSS REPORT
Welcome to Huntington
's Weekly
Fishing and Outdoors Report (Jan. 27, 2012)
At Lake Oroville, the lake elevation is now at 828', or 70 feet below full pool and the water surface temperature is 49 degrees. Recent rains have brought the lake back up with inflow topping 4,000cfs last week and the water is stained with some color now. Good mud lines have been occurring in and around the river arms of the lake now.
Bass fishing has improved with the increase of water coming into the lake, the bass are now in winter mode and staging near any flow of water coming in from feeder creeks. At those spots they’re feeding on the baitfish drawn to the inflows also. Above slot sized with fish have been hitting pretty good with spots to 3lbs reported being caught on all the usual baits, 4” straight tail worms, 2” tubes and small jigs with natural colors. Small bass shallower from 10 to 20 feet. Drop-shot small tubes, or small jigs and worms to suspended fish off of secondary points too. A good number of fish to 3+lbs being caught on rip baits and spinner baits around the mud lines, anywhere from 10 to 30 feet deep, with a few Largemouth caught all the way down to 50 feet deep on 3/16oz.to3/8oz. finesse jigs, football jigs and shaky heads in natural colors.
Coho or silver salmon fishing has been wide open for 11 to 12 inch fish, both trolling from 20 to 70 feet deep and mooching cut bait, or casting spoons or minnows under a bobber. The little Cohos are all over the lake and hitting almost anything, knowledgeable anglers are releasing the small fish to grow up. Quite a few good size fish over three pounds are being caught near the feeder creeks, but those fish are in spawning mode and most are dark. A few larger Cohos are still being caught using the same ole’ productive rigs; a good sized dodger and a white UV hoochie tipped with a tiny chunk of salt cured anchovy, or sling blade with a threaded nightcrawler and spoons like the ˝ ounce Kastmaster. Trolling by the green bridge, dam, Middle Fork arm and main body points are giving up one or two good sized fish a rod for those who work at catching the silvers. Look for the Cohos in coves that have water coming in from feeder creeks.
On the lower Feather River the water is now stained a brownish green and is starting to clear, with visibility now only at about 2 feet 600 cfs being released to the low flow at Oroville, with 1100 cfs being released from the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet, for a total of 1700 cfs to the river below in the Oroville Wildlife Area and about 1640 cfs at the Gridley gauge. Water temps at 47 to 90 degrees in the Low flow and near 51 degrees below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet.
On the low flow, the stretch from State Hwy 70 upstream to the table Mountain Bicycle Bridge has been fair to good since it opened to Steelhead fishing on Sunday Jan. 1st. Most anglers are reporting catching a fish or two. There’s some unusually large adult steelhead present in this stretch, but most of them are very dark and should be left alone to spawn unmolested. Believe it or not, some of the fish are over 15 lbs! There are a few late run bright fish to 6+lbs starting to show in anglers catches last week and more fresh fish should be coming.
The steelies have been keying in on salmon fry that are about 1-1/2” long and the eggs of other steelhead and aquatic insects. Fry and minnow patterns like Milts Smelt and other baitfish patterns were hot last week, Flesh flies, Egg and mayfly nymphs and streamers are working for the fly casters, while globugs and egg colored beads, night crawlers, single eggs, roe, spinners and spoons are all working for the spin casters. Remember the stretch above Highway 70 is Barbless hooks only, with a limit of one hatchery steelhead per day and in possession. Look for them in the riffles, runs and pools in that section.
Downriver below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet the reduction of flows has opened access to prime runs and riffles for wading anglers now. Steelhead fishing had also been pretty good from Palermo beach to below Gridley last week however few reports have come in from below Hwy 162. Night crawlers and Globugs had been taking two to four pound fish there now that the island riffles are wadeable.
Salmon fishing from 1,300 feet below the Outlet and downstream is over and the season closed officially on Sunday December eleventh, 2011. The entire river is now closed to salmon fishing. No salmon maybe removed from the water and targeting them to catch and release is prohibited also.
On the Hunting scene, the Waterfowl hunting has been fair with the stormier weather conditions improving the flights and thus the hunting.. For those that are hunting private clubs with flooded fields, A 1.5 to 3.5 bird average, per hunter, has been it with the lack of good hunting conditions. There were lots of geese around, mostly Specks and Snows and they seemed to be on the move south with the Full moon this w/e... At State and Federal refuges, shooting in the Sacramento NWA refuges had been fair to good last week with a 3.5 to 4.5 bird average per hunter with the first hour of shoot time offering the best, if not only, opportunity all day, with only an occasional flights coming in the afternoon.
Quail hunting has slowed some with the rainy weather in the local areas. Hunters with pointing or flushing dogs are seeing at least a covey or two but getting the birds up, out of cover can be a chore. Most hunters are getting about three to five birds an outing in the Oroville Wildlife Area and in the foothills to the east.
Snowmobile scene as Bucks Lake has finally got some snow. Conditions are rated as fair, but declining with more sunny weather forcasted.
See you next week!
